The Lined Butterflyfish is not a common sight on Maui — though it is more common here and on Hawaii (Big Island) than the other main Hawaiian Islands. When it is seen, it is often in surprisingly shallow water. It is the largest butterflyfish on Maui and its size and “dinner plate” shape quickly distinguishes it from the Threadfin Butterflyfish. The Lined Butterflyfish feeds on coral, algae, and zooanthids, but also indulges in invertebrates, such as clams and anemones. According to the IUCN Red List, it is a species of “least concern,” due to its wide range.
