Common Northern Comb Jelly, Bolinopsis infundibulum

                                                                                                                                                               Return to Ctenophores

This ctenophore can get fairly large — up to 15 cm or 6″.  Like all comb jellies it vibrates its fine cilia in order to move up, down and sideways in the water column, often creating a rainbow-like effect.  This particular ctenophore takes on a number of different shapes, from butterfly-like to tube-like, to a bent series of lobes, to a bizarre funnel shape.  It too has eight bands of combs, like the largish Cigar Comb Jelly (Beroe abyssica), but it is appears to be far more transparent and less gelatinous.
