ENDEMIC to Hawaii.
Like all parrotfish, Spectacled Parrotfish begin life (their initial phase -IP) as females. Only a select few will transform into males (terminal phase TP), and even fewer into supermales. Unlike some species of parrotfish that are found in large schools, the Spectacled is generally observed as a solitary individual or in small groups. Due to overfishing, the Chlorurus perspicillatus is a rare sight in the main Hawaiian Islands, but is prolific in the NW Island chain and Johstone Atoll. For more information on their conservation status please see the IUCN redlist.
